Graduate of the SPC Academy 1-year Professional Development Program

Many people secretly dream of a fulfilling creative life and find themselves waiting indefinitely for the right time. The truth is that “the right time” is as much a myth as it is a choice.

Huan knew that following her expected path in finance wasn’t going to give her the fulfillment she was looking for, so she made a change to put herself first and pursue her passion for photography.

The transition from enthusiast to professional is a journey of both courage and craft. Huan’s journey from SPC Academy to the heart of the Basel art scene is a prime example of what happens when world-class professional photography training meets an unstoppable work ethic.

Watch: An Interview with Huan Cao

SPC Academy 1-Year Professional Photography Program

The SPC Academy 1-Year Professional Photography Program is a comprehensive photography education in the technical, artistic, and business skills you need to be successful. Designed for those ready to make a serious commitment to their craft, it comes with an “Everything You Need to Know to Go Pro” guarantee.

Our program is uniquely suited for individuals at a crossroads:

The Career Reinventor: Like Huan, many of our students come from high-pressure corporate backgrounds looking for a more fulfilling “second act.”

The Global Relocator: For those who have moved to Switzerland to support a partner’s career, this program offers a way to build a local network and a portable skill set.

The Dedicated Visionary: For those who now have the time and resources to invest in themselves, the Academy provides the structure to turn a lifelong passion into a legacy.

Over the course of 12 months, students move far beyond the basics. Under the mentorship of industry experts, they master photography basics before moving on to developing their own style, eventually earning a photography certification and finishing with a capstone exhibition at the end of their program.

Praise for Huan

Huan’s success is no accident. While the SPC Academy provided the technical foundation and the mentorship of teachers like Catherine Lewis and Fabiana Nunes along the way, it was Huan’s own tenacity and talent that allowed her to make her mark on the art scene in Basel.

Now she is happily living her photography dream. At her gallery & studio, she creates her own art and also helps other artists gain visibility for theirs.

The most frequent question that we receive from our students is : “I’m new to photography / videography, which camera / lens should I buy”?

We update this article every year to help you choose the correct gear for your needs. The opinions in this article are based on extensive research in the Swiss and German markets and our experience with thousands of students during our classes.

Table of Contents

Current trends for 2026

Overall recommendations:

General purpose beginner kit

Landscape Photography

Portrait Photography

Sports Photography

Wildlife Photography

Filmmaking / Videography / Vlogging

Current trends for 2026

Full Frame Popularity: Full frame sensors are more affordable than ever.

Autofocus Revolution: Subject tracking (Eyes, Animals, Vehicles) is now standard even in budget models.

Video First: Almost all new cameras are now excellent hybrids for video and vlogging.

Overall recommendations:

Buying advice:

Consider buying secondhand: A camera with under 50,000 actuations has plenty of life left.

Consider renting before you buy to figure out which brand you will actually use. Remember that you cannot use lenses from different manufacturers, so once you select a brand, you will have to start investing in lenses made for that brand.

Skip the “Kit Lens”: Usually 18-55mm, these lenses struggle in low light. Buy the body only and pair it with a higher-quality prime or zoom lens.

Invest in learning: Better gear doesn’t make you a better photographer. Save on gear in the beginning and invest in classes & education. Learning photography will get you better photos with any camera, including your phone. Cameras are like paintbrushes; buying the best won’t guarantee a masterpiece.

Gear advice:

Go Mirrorless: DSLRs are legacy tech. Mirrorless cameras are lighter, faster, and show you the final image before you shoot.

Sensor Size: We generally recommend APS-C (Cropped Sensor) for beginners to save weight and money. Consider Full Frame only if you shoot mostly in low light.

Get a Custom Strap: The strap in the box is usually uncomfortable. Upgrade immediately to a good strap to save your neck.

Pair a fancy lens with a cheaper camera. Cameras simply capture what the lens sees. Better lenses will always make better images.

Buy a camera with an interchangeable lens: Fixed-lens cameras limit your learning flexibility. As a beginner, you need to experiment with wide and telephoto focal lengths, which requires interchangeable lenses.

General purpose beginner kit

Quick Summary: Top Picks for 2026

Best budget camera: Nikon Z50 II

Best Mid-Range Camera: Canon R6 Mark II / Nikon Z6 III

Best High-End Camera: Nikon Z8

Essential lenses: An all purpose zoom lens (e.g. 24-120mm) plus a specialist 35mm or 50mm.

For beginners with a budget, we recommend a mirrorless camera with a cropped sensor (also called aps-c), with a good lens or two. For those with higher budgets, nowadays there are great full frame sensor camera offers, however remember that full frame camera will need bigger and more expensive full frame lenses.

More expensive cameras have better build quality, better high ISO performance, better autofocus, extra features and maybe specific features like weather sealing or two card slots that a pro would need but would not benefit a hobbyist.

Also consider user gear as mentioned above, to get more features for the same budget.

We don’t recommend the kit lenses that come with the camera. Buy the camera body and choose your lens(es) yourself instead of relying on the lowest quality lenses that the camera manufacturers attach to the camera to keep the price as low as possible. Remember, the lens creates the image and the camera simply captures it. With a cheap lens, you will create a low quality image for your camera to capture.

As of 2026, all three leading brands (Canon, Nikon, Sony) offer similar performances for each price point, so you cannot go wrong by choosing any of them. Canon and Nikon are usually more user friendly with their buttons and menus and ergonomics. Sony usually leads with the latest technologies in their sensors; however, we find their menus and the buttons sometimes too complicated for a beginner.

Whatever your level in photography, we strongly recommend a good strap to make carrying your camera much easier. The original straps that come with your camera are not comfortable; they are too short and not ergonomic. A good strap will make it very comfortable to carry your camera and you can use it with any camera that you have. The brand that we recommend is BlackRapid (Sports model).

This strap has soft padding that always stays on your shoulder, distributes the weight equally to both sides of your body, and when you need to take a photograph, the camera is easily pulled up into position because the camera glides along the sling while the shoulder pad stays put.

You can order it from our online store at special prices for our followers.

Learning skills like understanding light, posing, communication are really much more important than photography gear in portraiture.
Camera & Lens

Wildlife photography usually requires a significant investment in lenses to get close to your subjects without disturbing them. Our recommendations:

Budget: Canon powershot zoom $250 (binocular)

Canon R7 + RF 100mm-500mm lens $4000

Canon R5 + Canon 800mm f11 (lighter) $4800 new

Sony A1 + 600mm f/4 (total $19500) or Sony 400 mm f2.8 combined with a teleconverter x2 to get a 800mm at f5.6

Nikon Z8 has eye-tracking for bird photography that is off the charts, if you have the budget. Add the new Nikon 400 f/2.8 Z if you have the budget.

Also check Tamron’s 150-600mm (~$1200). It works with all major brands, is quite cheap compared to similar lenses, and is great for beginners.

To hide and shoot: A tripod is obligatory (Travel series of any major brand, prefer carbon fiber, twist mechanism and ball head) and even better if it has a gimbal. We recommend the wonderful MeFOTO GlobeTrotter Classic Carbon (CHF 250)

As the days get shorter and the November weather keeps us inside, it’s the perfect time to turn our homes into our personal photo studios! Don’t let the lack of sunshine dampen your photographic spirit. With a few simple tricks and perhaps a couple of affordable tools, you can capture beautiful, well-lit photos right in your own living space.

Here are 3 practical tips to help you take stunning indoor photos:

Tip #1: Use your windows as your main light source

50mm, f/5, 1/100s, ISO 800. Altun Photography (@altuno)

During the day, large windows are the best light source with soft, diffused light. Position your subject near a window, but out of direct sunlight (if there is any!). Switch off other lights to avoid color casts. Observe how the light falls in different rooms throughout the day to find your best window.

Tip #2: Open Up Your Aperture

50mm, f/1.4, 1/50s, ISO 110. Altun Photography (@altuno)

To make your subject truly pop against a softly blurred background (known as “bokeh”), use a wider aperture (smaller f-number like f/1.8 or f/2.8). This will not only isolate your subjects from a distracting background, it will also let in plenty of light so that you don’t have to use very high ISO’s and get clean shots. This is why we recommend a prime lens (e.g. 50mm f/1.8) much more than a kit lens like 18-55. These lenses are very affordable and will get you game-changing results.

Tip #3: Create soft light with a lamp or flash by bouncing from your walls

58mm, f/1.4, 1/60s, ISO 1800, flash bounced from the white wall behind the photographer. Altun Photography (@altuno)

During the evenings, the ceiling lights are not your friend They will create shadows in the eyes and highlights at the top of the head. The built-in “pop-up” flash is also not flattering, it will create harsh, unflattering shadows. The secret is to “bounce” the light. Get a simple external speedlight (flash) that fits your camera hot shoe. Instead of pointing it at your subject, rotate the head to point at a white ceiling or a wall behind you. The light will bounce off the surface and come down as soft, diffused light that looks professional and natural.

Bonus tip: Use auto ISO & Aperture Priority mode

Many photographers are afraid to raise their ISO because they fear “grainy” photos. However, in low-light indoor situations, a low ISO often forces your camera to use a slow shutter speed, resulting in motion blur. Remember: A sharp, grainy photo is always better than a smooth, blurry one. Use the combination of Aperture Priority Mode and Auto ISO. Select the lowest Aperture your lens allows. This will reduce speed and increase ISO as needed, so that you can concentrate on the light and composition, which is the most important element in your photo.

SPC Academy students come from all walks of life, but they have two things in common: a passion for photography and a commitment to doing the hard work necessary to bring their dreams to life.

We, their teachers, are so proud of what they have accomplished, both during their time at the academy and after it. And it is our pleasure to share here some of the stories of the alumni who have built the lives they dreamed of.

Stefie VB Photographie

Portrait photographer – from family and business photography to Fine Art.

The SPC Academy truly changed my life. I had just quit my corporate job at a big firm and had no idea what would come next. During this transition, I decided to take classes at SPC. What I loved most was that every module was taught by a different teacher — each one so passionate about their craft. Their enthusiasm was contagious and made me want to become a photographer too.

My growth during the program was enormous — not only on a technical and visual level, but also personally. Photography became a way to express myself, and it gave me more confidence. What’s even more special: almost a year after finishing the program, I’m still in touch with several teachers. That says a lot about the warmth and community at SPC.

During the Academy, I fell in love with Fine Art photography. One of the teachers, Dai Bui, explained how it’s a powerful medium to express and transfer emotions — and that truly resonated with me. It sparked a deep motivation to keep growing, refine my style, and become a better photographer.

My goal for 2025 is to bring my work to a higher level and take part in international competitions. Just three months into the year, I’ve already received 4 international awards (2x silver, 2x bronze) and had 3 works selected internationally — 2 of which will be exhibited.

None of this would have been possible without the inspiration, support, and encouragement I received at SPC — I’m truly grateful. Thank you!

SPC Academy Participant 2020-2021

I’m a keen and passionate private photographer trying to improve my skills and experience step by step. I’ve learned that feedback from my teachers at SPC Academy and other professionals is crucial.
My main interest is architecture and landscape photography while I have an open mind for other genres.

My journey began some years after retiring at an SPC Photo Awards exhibition where Osan Altun (the owner) encouraged me to participate in the Academy. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my lifetime. Our fully committed and inspiring teachers gave their best to motivate us. I learned much more than expected about technical aspects, mainly how to recognise and utilize light and as well a lot about photography as a genre of art. History of photography and business aspects were not lacking either.

My most loved class was «Ways of Seeing» where our eyes were trained to see differently. My artistic vision is bound to a quote of Henri Cartier-Bresson who said, “For me, photography is to place head, heart and eye along the same line of sight. It’s a way of life”.

Encouraged and supported very much by my mentor Catherine Lewis– a teacher at SPC Academy – I got the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society LRPS (GB) in 2023. After that, more and more I felt the wish to showcase my art. Again, SPC with its Artists Corner in the regular exhibitions in Zurich and Geneva provided the necessary platform for me, followed by Galerie Sechs in Basel, an ambitious start-up owned by Huan Cao, former student of SPC Academy like me.

The high point was my first participation at photoSCHWEIZ in Zurich in February 2025, where I was accepted with two different series of architectural photographs. Besides that, I was among the first ten in an open call for landscape images in on online photo competition. The journey continues – always looking for the best balance in my life together with my wife Evelyne. She herself is a passionate gardener.

Lifestyle and personal branding photographer

Photography has always been one of my favorite creative outlets. I love working with people and creating images that feel thoughtful, honest, and personal. I focus mostly on portrait and branding sessions, and I also take on creative projects that explore a range of subjects—from sport and nature to storytelling and our connection to meaningful places.

SPC gave me the structure and clarity I really needed to grow my business—especially when it came to marketing and building a portfolio that reflects my style. The classes gave me both technical confidence and creative direction, and I still refer back to what I learned in the portrait and studio lighting modules. There was a generous, supportive energy throughout the courses that made it easier to take creative risks and grow into my own voice as a photographer.

I love creating in both color and black and white to offer clients a mix of realism and timelessness—two qualities that, paired with a touch of minimalism, really define my aesthetic.

Since opening my own studio in Gland, Switzerland, I’ve been able to offer clients a calm, intentional space where they can feel fully seen. My sessions are relaxed and collaborative, whether we’re documenting family moments, personal milestones, or building a strong brand identity through visuals. I also offer one of the few studio setups in the area equipped to accommodate aerialists—photographing these incredible artists is a true passion of mine.

Photography, for me, is about connection—slowing down, paying attention, and reflecting back the beauty I see in others. I’m grateful that SPC gave me the tools and support to turn that into a business I love.

Ivana Hajzmanova

Humanitarian, social and landscape photographer and storyteller

Signing up for the SPC Academy was one of the best decisions I have ever taken to make my dreams come true. I loved the idea of meeting different teachers for the classes and learning from their different perspectives and approaches. Each class was incredibly inspiring and helped me reflect on what I want to focus on in my art and how to express it all in my photographs.

I found especially useful the classes on Vision and Style which made me go deep into my own story to understand where my creativity and passion for photography comes from and how to work with it in the future to create my own distinct style. I also loved the practical classes where I could ask all the technical questions I had and learn to work with people I photograph.

At the core of my work is humanitarian and social photography where I tell powerful, untold stories of resilience, vulnerability, and quiet courage with my camera. My approach is rooted in authenticity and empathy, capturing soft, unfiltered and relatable in-between moments that reveal the humanity behind the headlines. My work emphasizes the softness of every day moments and the beauty of unfinished stories, creating a distinctive visual voice that resonates in a crowded market. I seek to capture subtle, often invisible details: the soft shadows that brush across a face, the gentle interplay of light and color, the pastel tones that evoke calm and reflection.

Photography and storytelling, for me, are not just tools of art—they are ways to give voice to the soft, raw, and vulnerable aspects of the human experience. Each story I tell is an invitation to step into a world where we move beyond the statistics and headlines to see the individuals. It’s about embracing the imperfection, the unfinished, and the unspoken moments that make us who we are.

I approach every project with deep empathy, vulnerability, and respect, recognizing that both photography and storytelling are privileges and responsibilities. Through my work, I aim to amplify the voices of the overlooked, illuminate the untold stories, and challenge the way the world sees those often excluded from the narrative.

I finished the SPC Academy only recently but I already managed to adjust my daily job contract to become a photographer when I travel on humanitarian missions across the world, and my photos will be published in the upcoming global report. I am also starting two partnerships with other artists in the humanitarian and human rights field here in Geneva and another one with a Swiss female entrepreneurs network. I am so excited about everything ahead.

Follow my IG page or website to learn more about them in the coming weeks as they unfold.

by Niels Menko

Remember when editing photos meant tweaking contrast and exposure sliders for hours? Or when capturing the perfect moment meant waiting for golden hour and hoping your subject stayed still? In 2025, photography is still about capturing moments — but now, AI is right there beside you, changing how you shoot, edit, and
even imagine your images.

Let’s dive into how AI is transforming photography this year.

Shoot Less, Create More

In the past, you needed a camera to make a photo. Now? A keyboard will do.

With tools like Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, and DALL·E, you can type a simple prompt like “a mountain lake at sunrise with fog rolling in” — and in seconds, AI generates a stunning, photorealistic image. These aren’t just filters or effects — they’re full-fledged compositions built from scratch, powered by massive image training data.

This doesn’t mean traditional photography is dying. It just means you have new ways to visualize what’s in your head — even before you pick up the camera.

Smarter Cameras, Better Shots

Cameras today are basically tiny computers with artistic instincts. Whether you’re using a pro DSLR or the latest smartphone, AI is running behind the scenes: identifying subjects, predicting motion, and adjusting settings in real-time.

This is especially game-changing in fast-moving situations like sports, wildlife, or candid portraits. Your gear knows where the action is going before you press the shutter. Missed shots are becoming a thing of the past.

Editing Has Evolved

If you’ve ever spent hours masking, cloning, or retouching, welcome to a new world. In 2025, editing tools like Photoshop and Luminar Neo offer AI-powered features that feel like magic. You can:

Instantly swap skies or backgrounds

Remove unwanted objects with a click

Relight entire scenes

Change facial expressions

Extend image borders seamlessly

Generative Fill and AI masking mean the barrier between imagination and output has never been lower. It’s not about shortcuts — it’s about speed, experimentation, and focus on the creative part of the process.

Reality Check: What’s Real Anymore?

With AI-generated images now nearly indistinguishable from real photos, a new conversation has emerged: where’s the line between photography and digital art?

This matters a lot in journalism, documentary, and legal contexts — where authenticity isn’t optional. That’s why content verification tools and digital watermarks are becoming more common, helping creators and platforms track what’s real and what’s not.

But in art, advertising, and storytelling? The boundaries are more flexible — and creativity is king.

AI Isn’t Replacing You — It’s Working With You

Despite all the hype, AI isn’t here to take over photography. It’s here to give you superpowers.

You still need vision, taste, and storytelling instincts. AI just helps you get from idea to image faster — and with fewer technical headaches in between. It opens doors for experimentation, helps you create things you never thought possible, and removes some of the most frustrating bottlenecks in your creative process.

The Bottom Line

Photography in 2025 isn’t about choosing between “real” and “AI.” It’s about combining both — the human eye and machine intelligence — to make something better.

Whether you’re a pro shooter, a hobbyist, or just someone who loves playing with images on your phone, AI is putting more creative control in your hands.

So go ahead — imagine big. The tools to bring it to life are finally here.

6 ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Photographers, gear up for a festive challenge! Step into the vibrant world of Switzerland’s Christmas markets, where every stall, light, and candid moment is just waiting to be captured.

In this blog post, we’re extending a challenge to you: unlock the magic of the season through your lens by taking your best-ever photos of your local Christmas market. (Not sure where yours is? Find it here.)

Tag @swissphotoclub on Instagram for the chance to be featured.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Beautiful Bokeh

<button

Capture the twinkling lights of the market stalls, creating a beautiful bokeh effect in the background.

Shooting bokeh is easy: place your subject at least 2-3m in front of the lights, then set your lens to its biggest zoom, your aperture to its smallest number, then get as close as possible to your subject.

Focus on the details

<button

Embrace the magic of simplicity and uncover the subtle details that can tell a story as enchanting as a much busier composition–if not more so.

Look for an ornament that catches your eye, the gentle glow of a lone candle, a street sign covered in snow, or another quiet wonder that stands out to you amid the holiday hustle & bustle.

Maximalism

Photo credit: Seerat Singh, SPC Academy alumna

On the other hand, sometimes more is better! Capture a sense of abundance by composing a photo with lots to look at. When you skillfully embrace the busyness, you can turn chaos into art. With maximalist compositions, the rule of thirds need not apply. Instead, think about creating a composition with a distinct foreground, middle ground, and background.

Scrumptious Still Life

<button

Before you dig in, arrange some of your delicious holiday treats for a quick shoot. Find the composition that best shows off the colors and details of your festive finds. Keep in mind that while some compositions look striking from above, many subjects (especially those with more depth) benefit from a lower angle.

Santa’s Helpers

Every person working at the Christmas market has a role in bringing the magic to life for us. So give them their place of honor in your photography! Turn your lens towards the hands of a vendor wrapping a gift, the expressions of a performer lost in the music, or the energy of the carousel operator preparing to delight a line of children.

To catch key moments even when light is low, a “fast” prime lens is great (for example a 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 or an 85mm f/1.8). Consider setting your camera to burst mode if your subject is moving to increase your chances of getting the shot just right.

Luminous Landscapes

<button

Just like any landscape, light here is critical: if you can, try to plan your shoot for the golden hour, just before sunset. Then use a wide-angle lens to capture the whole market scene.

Use a tripod and a slow shutter speed to blur the movement of people while keeping fixtures like huts and stalls sharp. Consider using pathways or string lights to add leading lines to your composition, or frame your shot using archways, windows, or decorative elements within the market to add depth and context.

Importance of photography website

In this digital age, especially for photographers, having a well-designed website is not an option—it’s a necessity. Your design will determine your future client’s first impression as well as the quality of your photos.

Establishing Professionalism: The first impression matters; a sleek, professional website portrays you as a serious photographer. Your website acts as your digital storefront, demonstrating your commitment to your craft.

Showcasing Your Work: A well-curated portfolio on your website can speak volumes about your style, expertise, and vision. It enables visitors to appreciate your talent and approach to photography, enticing them to engage with you further.

Attracting New Clients: A website is your online business card that helps clients find you, learn about your services, and reach out. It gives potential clients an easy way to explore your work, and if they like what they see, it’s a straightforward process to contact you.

Essential Elements of a Photography Website

Creating an engaging photography website goes well beyond displaying a few images. Here are key elements to consider.

Home Page: Think of your home page as the ‘front window display’ of your digital store—it needs to captivate visitors at first glance. It is the most critical component of your site. It should be captivating and provide a snapshot of what you offer. A well-designed home page will hook visitors and encourage them to explore more of your work. Feature some of your best photographs here to entice your audience, and make sure it’s easy for visitors to navigate to other parts of your website from here.

Portfolio: Your portfolio is the heart of your website—it should showcase your best work that aligns with your photographic style. Group your galleries based on your clientele (e.g. wedding portfolio, make-up portfolio, product photography, etc) and make sure to add image descriptions. Keep your galleries updated with your latest and greatest work, ensuring it truly represents your current skills and vision.

About Me/ Bio: Your bio is a chance to share your story, credentials, and personal touch—making you relatable and trustworthy. It should be authentic, engaging, and reflect your personality as it’s often the second page a visitor goes to after viewing your portfolio.

Contact Information and booking system: Providing clear contact information and a user-friendly booking system on your photography website makes it easy for potential clients to get in touch and book your services. Ensure that your contact form is straightforward and includes fields for essential information, such as the client’s name, email address, and project details.

Blog Section: Having a blog and regularly updating it will significantly help your google ranking (SEO). Regularly publish informative and entertaining content, such as behind-the-scenes stories, photography tips, and industry news, to keep your audience engaged and establish yourself as an authority in your field.

Client Testimonials: Client testimonials help build credibility and reassure prospective clients of your professional abilities. Positive feedback from past clients shows new visitors that you deliver excellent results and service. As an example, you can check how we display this on our website with a dedicated page and in all course pages (for example at our free course).

Choosing the Right Platform for Your Photography Website

With several website builders available, it’s essential to select the right platform for your needs, considering factors such as ease of use, customization options, and pricing. You can choose from three different platforms, then select the correct provider within that platform.

Specialist

Generalist

WordPress

Customize

1

2

3

Ease of use

2

3

1

Price (*)

1

2

3

SEO

1

2

3

(*) for price, higher score means lower price

A. Specialist Photography Website Platforms (Photodeck, SmugMug, PhotoShelter)

Specialized photography website platforms cater specifically to photographers’ needs, providing built-in features such as Lightroom integration to albums, e-commerce to allow your clients order photos directly from your website and client proofing galleries where your clients can make selections and make orders for editing. The biggest disadvantage is usually the blogging capabilities and the higher price from all the additional features. The target client is a working professional photographer.

Our recommendation in this category is Photodeck: This French company has all the features compared to the other US based competitors plus offer European tax compliance, multi-language as a basic option and Lightroom integration.

B. Generalist Website Platforms (Wix, Squarespace, etc)

These generalist platforms are known for their intuitive, user-friendly interfaces, catering mostly to the hobbyist photographers. They both offer a variety of drag-and-drop features, making it easy for even beginners to build a beautiful website. They also come with some eye-catching, designer-made templates.

However watch-out for a few disadvantages:

These beautiful templates usually are designed around the colors and themes of the provided images: They might not work as well with your own photos.

Limited Customization: While both platforms offer customization options, they might not be as extensive as what a specialized photography website builder or a platform like WordPress could provide.

Fewer Photography-Specific Features: Generalist platforms might not offer some of the specialized features that dedicated photography website builders provide. For example, client proofing tools, integrated print selling, or high-resolution image delivery might be less robust or absent altogether.

Our recommendation in this category is Wix: Squarespace and Wix are very similar, however we recommend Wix purely because of multi-language capability, which is very important in today’s age where you will want to be present in both English and local language searches.

C. WordPress (wordpress.org, not .com)

WordPress is a popular content management system, powering more than 40% of all the websites on the web. If you want full control over your website’s design and don’t mind a steeper learning curve, WordPress might be the perfect choice for you. With thousands of themes and plugins available, you can tailor your website to your specific requirements, creating a unique and dynamic online presence.

Advantages of WordPress

High Degree of Customization: When it comes to customization, WordPress stands unparalleled—offering complete control over every aspect of your website’s design and functionality. You can adjust every detail of your website and choose from thousands of themes and plugins to add specific functionality.

Rich Plugin Ecosystem: WordPress’s extensive plugin ecosystem allows you to add virtually any functionality to your website, such as:

Page builders like Elementor,

Image optimization plugins

Full fledged e-commerce solutions like WooCommerce.

Multi-language solutions like WPML

Strong SEO Capabilities: With WordPress’s robust SEO features, your website stands a better chance of ranking high on search engine results, driving more traffic to your site. WordPress offers excellent SEO capabilities, which are further enhanced by plugins like Rank-Math SEO. This can help your website rank higher on search engine results, making it easier for potential clients to find you.

Price: You can create your WordPress website for free, however you will still need to purchase your domain and hosting : We recommend Infomaniak for this in Switzerland. However, in total, this will still be much cheaper than the above two options.

Disadvantages of WordPress

Steep Learning Curve: Though powerful, WordPress can be overwhelming for beginners due to its more complex interface and the vast array of customization options. It might take time to learn how to use WordPress effectively, especially if you’re new to website building.

Photographer specialized features: Even if extremely powerful, it will be difficult to get the same features that the specialist platforms like PhotoDeck offer, such as Lightroom integration, portfolio customisability and client proof galleries.

How to use WordPress

To use WordPress, we recommend Informaniak in Switzerland. Here are the steps:

Order WordPress hosting from Infomaniak

Select and add your domain (we recommend to add both .com plus .ch or .de)

Select web hosting

Add your free email address to the order

Install wordpress automatically from the Infomaniak admin

In conclusion, WordPress offers powerful and flexible tools that can create a highly customized, feature-rich photography website. However, this platform might be more challenging for beginners and requires ongoing maintenance. As always, consider your technical comfort level, specific needs, and resources when choosing a platform for your photography website.

Designing and Customizing Your Photography Website

A. Selecting a Theme and Layout

Choosing the right theme and layout for your photography website sets the foundation for your site’s appearance and user experience, ensuring that it aligns with your brand and style. When selecting a theme, consider factors such as aesthetics, functionality, and ease of customization to find the perfect fit for your needs.

B. Integrating Your Branding Elements

Incorporating your branding elements, such as your logo, color scheme, and typography, helps create a consistent and recognizable visual identity across your photography website. Ensure that your branding is cohesive and reflects your artistic vision, contributing to a memorable user experience.

C. Optimizing Image Display and Load Times

Ensuring that your images are displayed at optimal quality and load quickly is essential for providing an enjoyable user experience on your photography website. Compress your images to reduce file size without sacrificing quality, and consider using a Content Delivery Network (CDN) to improve load times for users around the world.

D. Creating a Responsive and Mobile-Friendly Design

A responsive and mobile-friendly design ensures that your photography website looks great and functions smoothly on all devices, accommodating the growing number of mobile users. Test your website on various devices and browsers to identify and resolve any usability issues, ensuring a seamless experience for all visitors.

Marketing and Promoting Your Photography Website

A beautiful website is completely useless if no one can find it. Use the below recommendations to increase your site’s visibility.

A. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Implementing SEO best practices on your photography website helps increase your visibility in search engine results, driving more organic traffic to your site. Optimize your website by using relevant keywords, creating high-quality content, and building a robust backlink profile to improve your search engine rankings.

You can also register your website to an SEO tracking service. These are usually very expensive, but use SE Ranking which is much more reasonably priced and have all necessary features (e.g. site audit) that you can immediately use.

B. Social Media Integration

Integrating social media platforms into your photography website enables you to expand your reach, engage with your audience, and drive more traffic to your site. Share your latest work, blog posts, and promotions on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest to connect with potential clients and grow your online presence.

C. Email Marketing and Newsletter

Incorporating email marketing and a newsletter subscription option on your photography website allows you to nurture relationships with your audience and keep them informed about your latest work, promotions, and events. We do not recommend MailChimp as they are now very expensive and many other services have the same or even better features. As Swiss Photo Club, we use MailerLite since late 2022.

D. Networking and Collaboration

Actively networking and collaborating with other photographers, industry professionals, and influencers can help increase your exposure and attract more visitors to your photography website. Attend photography events, join online forums, and participate in social media communities to connect with like-minded individuals and grow your network.

Monetizing Your Photography Website

A. Selling Prints and Products

Adding an e-commerce component to your photography website enables you to sell prints and photography-related products, generating additional income streams. Use platforms like Photodeck or WooCommerce to integrate a secure and user-friendly online store into your website.

B. Licensing and Stock Photography

Offering licensing options or participating in stock photography platforms can provide you with an additional source of revenue from your photography website. Research and join reputable stock photography websites like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, or Getty Images to sell your work to a broader audience.

C. Offering Online Courses and Workshops

If you possess a wealth of photography knowledge and experience, creating and selling online courses or workshops through your website can be a lucrative way to monetize your expertise. Develop engaging and informative courses, and promote them through your website, social media, and email marketing to attract interested learners.

Maintaining and Updating Your Photography Website

A. Regularly Adding New Content

Regularly updating your portfolio and blog with fresh content keeps your photography website relevant and encourages visitors to return. Set a schedule for adding new photos and blog posts, ensuring that your website remains up-to-date and showcases your latest work. Photodeck’s Lightroom integration is perfect for this.

B. Monitoring Website Performance and Analytics

Keeping an eye on your photography website’s performance and analytics helps you identify areas for improvement and measure the success of your marketing efforts. Use tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track user behavior, traffic sources, and search engine rankings, enabling you to make informed decisions about your website’s development.

C. Staying Informed on Industry Trends and Best Practices

Staying current on industry trends and best practices ensures that your photography website remains up-to-date and competitive in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Subscribe to photography blogs, podcasts, and newsletters to keep your finger on the pulse of the photography world and incorporate new ideas and techniques into your website.

Final Thoughts: The Journey to a Thriving Photography Website

Building a successful photography website takes time, effort, and creativity, but the rewards of showcasing your work, building your brand, and growing your business make it well worth the investment. With dedication and persistence, your photography website can become a powerful tool in your journey to success as a professional photographer.

How can I improve my photography website’s search engine ranking?

Street photography is a genre of photography that captures everyday life in public places. It’s typically characterized by candid, (seemingly) unposed images of people and their surroundings. Unlike other types of photography, street photography usually captures real-life moments as they happen. It requires a keen eye for detail, good timing, and the ability to capture emotion and atmosphere in a single frame.

Overall, street photography offers a unique and exciting way to capture the beauty and complexity of everyday life.

Photo credit: SPC Instructor Thomas Halfmann

History of Street Photography

Street photography has a rich history that dates back to the early days of photography. Some of the earliest examples can be found in the work of Charles Nègre, who documented the streets of Paris in the mid-19th century, and Eugène Atget, who did the same in the late 19th & early 20th centuries.

However, it was not until the 20th century that street photography became a recognized art form. The work of photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Garry Winogrand helped to define the genre and make it one of the most popular and influential forms of photography today.

With the rise of digital technology and social media, street photography has become even more accessible and widespread, allowing photographers from all around the world to share their work and perspectives on the urban landscape.

Photo credit: SPC Instructor Thomas Halfmann

Street Photography Gear

When it comes to street photography, having the right gear can make a big difference in the outcome of your photos. A camera with manual controls, a fast lens with a wide aperture, and a compact size can all be beneficial. Many street photographers prefer smaller cameras such as mirrorless or rangefinder models that are less conspicuous and allow for discreet shooting. A versatile zoom lens or a prime lens in the 28mm to 50mm range is ideal for capturing different perspectives and compositions.

Other useful accessories include an extra battery, memory cards, and a camera strap that allows for quick adjustments. Ultimately, the best gear for street photography is the one that you feel comfortable with and allows you to focus on capturing the moment.

Photo credit: SPC Instructor Thomas Halfmann

Techniques for great composition in Street Photography

Capturing emotions and mood in street photography is essential to make the viewer feel something when they look at the image. One way to achieve this is by paying attention to lighting, shadow, and color.

For example, the use of contrasty light and deep shadows can create a sense of drama or mystery. Warm colors can evoke feelings of joy or happiness, while cooler colors can convey a sense of melancholy or sadness.

By observing the environment and the people in it, and using these elements purposefully, you can create images that communicate emotion and mood effectively. Additionally, capturing candid moments and genuine expressions can also help convey emotion in street photography.

Photo credit: SPC Instructor Thomas Halfmann

Candid vs. Staged in Street Photography

Many street photographers argue that candid shots are the purest form of street photography, as they capture unposed, unfiltered moments of life as they happen. These types of shots are often the most authentic and powerful in conveying the emotion and atmosphere of a scene.

However, there are also valid reasons for using staged photography in the street. For example, staged photos give the photographer more control over the scene and can result in more artistic and thought-provoking images. Additionally, staged shots can help to address ethical concerns around photographing people without their consent, as they give the subject the opportunity to participate in the creation of the image.

Ultimately, both candid and staged approaches can produce great street photography, and the decision of which to use will depend on the goals of the photographer and the specific circumstances of each shot.

We believe everyone should be able to beautifully capture whatever it is that matters to them. But we also understand that not everyone has the same amount of time to dedicate to their creative goals.

That’s why we offer three different ways to learn, to meet everyone’s schedule. Do you know them all?

Short-term photography classes at Swiss Photo Club Zurich

#1: Short-Term Photography Classes

If you want to learn photography, this is a great place to start.

In as little as four hours or as many as 15, we’ll get you up to speed quickly in whatever it is you choose to learn, from general courses for beginners or intermediates to popular subjects like portraits & landscapes, or even more niche genres like nude or drone.

These classes have a results-oriented, practical curriculum that focuses on only the most impactful theory so you can start taking better photos right away. They’re perfect for people with limited time who still want to find a way to express themselves creatively.

Our short-term photography classes are great because we hire the best teachers in the industry; we keep the groups small enough to allow for lots of personalized attention in the context of a fun group atmosphere; and we’ve carefully crafted the curriculum to focus on the most important aspects of each topic so you don’t waste any time.

By the way, you can learn almost anything about photography on your own timeline with a private course.

If you love our short-term photography courses, these bundles are for you!

We’ve combed through our data to figure out which of the short-term classes people tend to take together. Then we’ve set them up so that, if you sign up for them all up-front, you’ll receive a valuable discount vs. registering for them all separately.

There are bundles for beginner and experienced photographers, covering subjects like portraits, outdoor photography, filmmaking, and even Photoshop.

Here’s how it works: First, you register for the bundle that’s right for you. Next, we’ll send you a promo code for each of the classes in your bundle, which you can use to register for each class without paying anything additional. Finally, you register for the classes in your bundle that fit your schedule, going as quickly or as slowly as you prefer.

#3: SPC Academy Comprehensive Photography Education

So far so good. But what if you want to develop deep expertise in photography without cutting any corners? That’s where SPC Academy comes in.

Unlike our short-term courses, which are really focused on improving your results quickly, the SPC Academy programs are focused on giving you a comprehensive understanding of photography and developing yourself as an artist and as a professional.

You’ll learn the history of photography and copy some of the great masters. You’ll go on all kinds of cool shoots planned by your teachers and mentors, learning by doing. You’ll even learn the business of photography so you can start turning your hobby into a career.

And by the way, no experience is required. The pace moves quickly, but we start from the beginning to make sure we all have the same vocabulary and that everyone has mastered the fundamentals before moving further.

There are 4 different SPC Academy programs:

The holidays are almost here! Here are our top tips you could use to take great photos during Christmas and share with friends and family.

Also check out our gift vouchers in Christmas design if you want to give the gift of learning photography to a loved one or to yourself

Here are our top Christmas photography tips to help you take better pictures and prepare for a beautiful new year:

Tip #1: Get great bokeh from Christmas lights

With Christmas lights in the background, place your subject at least 2-3m away from them.

If you have a DSLR / Mirrorless: Set your lens to the biggest zoom, your aperture to the smallest number and then get as close as possible to your subject. You should end up with a beautiful bokeh.

If you have a smartphone: Try using the portrait mode.

PS: A soft light (big light source close to the face) will get you best results. You can put a translucent white cloth between the light and your subject or reflect a strong light source from a white wall.

To master portraits, check our full-day portrait course (in Geneva or in the Swiss German region) and/or portrait practice workshops.

Tip #2: Capture beautiful street lights

Even if the Christmas markets have been all canceled in Switzerland, the streets are still decorated with special lights that can provide great backdrops for long exposures in the city.

The trick to getting great shots of festive street lights is to be there during the magic hours: just before sunrise or right after sunset. Place your camera on a tripod, set to aperture priority (f/8-f/11), disable auto-ISO and set ISO to the lowest number.

Christmas lights in Geneva: Check out the Boulevard Carl-Vogt and rue des Deux Ponts crossing, Place de la Fusterie, the big Christmas tree on Place du Molard and light installations on Li’lle Roussseau.

Christmas lights in Zurich: The switching on of “Lucy” is a firmly established tradition in Zurich and heralds the start of the Advent season. On the second-to-last Thursday in November, you can see the 23,000 light crystals shine for the first time, spread over a distance of one kilometer.

In Zürich, these pop-up outdoor venues add to the festive mood in the city: Weihnachtsinsel at Bauschänzli, Frau Gerold’s Winter-Garten, Winter-Garte at Europaplatz and Winterdorf at Tessinerplatz.

PRO tip: try light painting for some more extraordinary effects.

How to learn: To practice all these, check out our night photography course or long exposure practice workshops in your area.

Tip #3: Capture your kids’ holiday joy

There’s nothing quite like children to make you appreciate holiday magic! To get great shots of your kids (or grandkids), do a mix of posed, candid, and documentary photos. With kids, it’s all about the expression. Take as many photos as you need.

Put them in front of a nice background (like your Christmas tree) and think through your composition before they do something you know you’ll want to shoot (like opening a present) – that way, when the moments of pure Christmas joy come, you’ll be ready for them.

Tip #4: Take group portraits

A family or group portrait can be a memory to cherish – and you can use it for your Christmas card too.

You’ll want to position everyone by the Christmas tree and have some presents in the composition too. Get everyone roughly the same distance to the camera and huddle close.

Again, light is very important; try to have a soft light on everyone’s faces. Place your camera on a tripod as far away from the subjects as possible and use your zoom (to blur the background). Use the following settings:

Set self timer to 5-10 seconds

Set the self timer to fire multiple shots after the countdown (we recommend at least 5). In our experience, there’s always one person who will close their eyes or look away

Aperture priority (f/4 or f/5.6), automatic ISO. Use a tripod for this group shot so that you can be in the picture too.

Recommended Equipment

A “fast” prime lens is great for Christmastime photography and they’re not so expensive. For example a 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 or an 85mm f/1.8 will do wonders. If you prefer a zoom, then check 70-200mm f/4 (budget) or the king of zooms the 70-200mm f/2.8.

An external flash would do wonders to get good light. Reflect the flash from white walls for best results, never directly on the face.

A good tripod will help you get great long exposures outdoors or indoors, also combined with a flash can get fantastic indoor portraits.

If you don’t yet have a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, you can check our smartphone photography course to learn how to use it best or join one of our beginners classes in Swiss German or Romandie region where we lend a camera during the course.

After you take your photos, use Lightroom to sort them out, make them look better and share with family & friends.
